Australia Launches Global Talent Visa to Hire Highly Skilled Individuals

Australia has launched a streamlined, preference visa pathway for highly proficient and talented people to work and live in Australia permanently.

The Government of Australia and the industry have recognized there is increasing competition for talent throughout the globe and to compete we need to have a pathway that drives to certainty for individuals intending to come to Australia.

Number Positions Available and Focused Industries through Global Talent Program

This program is looking at hiring a maximum of 5,000 highly-skilled migrants in the below industry sectors:

  • Space & high-end manufacturing;
  • Food & agricultural business;
  • Energy & resources;
  • Digital technologies, data science, quantum information, and cyber security;
  • Major infrastructure & urban development; 
  • Medical technologies & pharmaceutical;
  • Financial technology.

Minister for Citizenship, Immigration, Multicultural Affairs, and Migrant Services David Coleman announced, with this program, we are focusing on the world’s most extremely skilled migrants and over time, Global Talent program has the capacity to have a transformative influence on the economy of Australia.

Minister for Science, Industry, and Technology Karen Andrews told us that we can produce high-paying regional jobs by delivering Australia a global tech hub and the Global Talent program is a sign to tech firms that we are open for business.

Global Talent Officers from the Home Affairs Department have already been deployed in Washington DC, Shanghai, Singapore, Berlin, Dubai & Santiago, and will have regional coverage. An immigration officer has also begun in New Delhi today, to promote the ability of the program.

Applicants should have the capacity to bring a salary at or above the Fair Work high-income threshold (F.W.H.I.T), which is presently AUD148,700. This figure is modified yearly on 1 July.

In order to apply applicants need to lodge an expression of interest (EOI) and it has to be endorsed by a nominator who has a nationwide reputation in the same area as you and is either:

  • A qualified Australian citizen or Australian resident
  • A qualified New Zealand citizen
  • An Australian organization
