Australia Immigration 2020: Opportunities for Semi-skilled Candidates

The Australian government has signed contracts with the Victoria's Great Southern Coast & Northern Territory for promoting the migration of semi-skilled workers with nominal proficiency in the English language to Australia.

As per these contracts, which are named the Designated Area Migration Agreements, semi-skilled workers with a lower skills level, income, and language ability can obtain Australia PR. The agreements principally aim to overcome the labor shortage in these specific areas and in the near future, the federal government will be signing more similar contracts with other regions in Australia.

Reforms in the Australian Immigration Points System

Some significant reforms that have been published in the General Skilled Migration (G.S.M) point system visa categories– Subclass 190 visa, Subclass 189 Visa, and Subclass 491 visa. Below are the maximum points that the corresponding qualification factors would be getting, as per the reforms:

  • 10 points for Having a skilled de facto partner or spouse
  • 15 points for State or territory nomination or family members sponsorship in Australia: 
  • 10 points for STEM qualifications (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics)
  • 10 points for not having a de facto partner or spouse
  • 5 points for having a de facto partner or spouse who is proficient in English

New Australian Regional visas

The government of Australia has launched 3 new regional visa categories:

  • Skilled Work Regional Provisional (Subclass 491) Visa;
  • Employer-Sponsored Regional (Subclass 494) Visa; and
  • Skilled Regional (Subclass 191) PR Visa. 

New Parent Visa

Australia has launched a new parent visa that enables migrants to sponsor their parents to live in Australia for a tenure of 5 years which is maximum. The migrants can select between a 3-year visa or a 5-year visa for sponsoring their parents. This visa can be renewed only one time. To be suitable for this visa, parents need to have complete coverage of health insurance and shouldn't have any healthcare loans.
